error 680

please help: every 5 mins or so my broadband connection disconnects with
error code 680 (there is no dial tone). I can then immediately reconnect so
there clearly IS a dial tone - 5 mins later the same thing happens. Might my
settings in NIS2005 be wrong? How would I check? Grateful for any help!

Hi, David.

"Broadband" could include either DSL (provided - directly or indirectly - by
your telephone company) or cable (provided by your television cable
company). You didn't specifically say, but apparently you have ADSL.

With MY ADSL, there's no such thing as a "dial tone". And there's no
convenient way to disconnect or reconnect. It's "always on". When I lose
the connection for any reason, I have to reboot so that the hardware
(Ethernet and DSL modem) can reconfigure themselves on the next boot. (I
also run NIS2005, but I don't see how that would affect your problem.)

You said, "I can then immediately reconnect"; HOW do you reconnect? Do you
have to reboot?

You also mentioned "error code 680". At www.dslforum.org, I searched for
"680" and got no hits. Could this code be unique to your particular ISP?
Who is your ISP?
