Error 633: The modem (or other connecting device) is already in useor is not configured properly...

Hi.

Once in a while my unstable broadband connection gets disconnected from
temporary outages, and I have to resort to EarthLink dial-up (using
Windows XP's dial-up network -- not TotalAccess software) for a
temporary Internet connection. I usually have Mozilla v1.7.5 open at
this time doing stuff. When I try to dial the ISP, I get this message
from Windows:

Opening port...

"Error 633: The modem (or other connecting device) is already in use or
is not configured properly."

In order to get rid of this, I have to exit Mozilla v1.7.5. How can I
prevent not doing this? This is annoying if I am in a middle of
something (filling out forms) and unable to save my work session. :(

Thank you in advance. :)

Ant,

Not sure if it will solve your problem, but if you click into 'Internet
Options' from the Control Panel > click into 'Connections' tab, you might
have your LAN setup while your dialup settings are grayed out (disabled).
Try adding your dialup connection in the box above the LAN setup (under
heading 'Dial-up & Virtual Private Network Settings'), then check the option
'Dial whenever a network connection is not present' (Do not set as the
'Default' connection), click OK.

Hi Drew. Thanks for the quick response. :)

I already have EarthLink (Default) for 'Dial-up & Virtual Private
Network Settings' list. I have "Never dial a connection" selected. Isn't
"Dial whenever a network connection is not present" automatic dial out
and connect to EarthLink? If so, then I do want to do this. I will do it
myself manually. Also, there is a greyed out Current line says EarthLink
with its "Set Default" button greyed out.

I read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q191444/ and searched for
Telephon.ini file. Windows XP did not find it. I also do not have
tapiini.exe file that it told me to run. I looked at ProviderFileName0's
value and it says unimdm.tsp. The instructions say to change to
TSP3216L.TSP. I assume that's a filename since I cannot find it. Should
I still change it?

I forgot to mention that this is with an old external USR Sportster

In Event Viewer it should give you an Event ID: and a source. I imagine
the Event ID is 633. Please check and advise the source.

Start, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer.

See "Error Message: Error 633 Modem Is Already in Use"

I would also ask Mozilla's support for help with this.

Check whether "rnaapp.exe" is running. Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and choose Task
Manager. Just look for the task in the Processes list. If it exists, select
it and click on End Process. Let us know if this works in WinXP, I have
tried it with success many times on 98/Me.

Your "unstable broadband" is one connection, alternate dial-up is another.
Both need configuring as individual Internet connections.
Each session of Mozilla establishes a separate connection path/route. It
MUST be closed down and restarted in the event of a broken connection. It
cannot cater for "outside" broken connections, but until closed down it's
still holding the original route, retaining the settings and ports. Thus,
they are unavailable for a new connection.

Sincerely, Len.

Thanks Yabbadoo. That stinks. Oh well. I guess I will have to learn to
live with it. I wished there was a way to tell Mozilla, drop the old
connection and use the new one.

I do not find this file in Windows XP SP2 (all updates). Even 2000 SP4
(all updates)! Is there a NT5 file that is like 9x's file?
