error 51 on usb hard drive/write delay failure

I want to use a usb drive for docs, mp3's etc. When I
write to it, it starts ok then goes into a loop on the usb
drive. How can I stop this? Event viewer shows a series of
error 51's.

Is the drive connected directly to a USB port on your system, or to a hub?
If to a hub, is it a powered or unpowered hub? Try connecting it to a
different USB port, preferably one directly on the computer itself. Also, if
you have several USB devices connected, try removing some of them and
testing.
