I was attempting to install the latest upgrade to java and received an Error
1305.
It read as follows: Error 1305.Error reading from file C:\ <file path>
Verify file exists and that you can access it. Initially, I followed the
path, saw the file and could access it, but it still gives me the same error
message. Microsoft's help site was helpless as it only assured me that my
problem was with my cd rom which is ridiculous since I was downloading from
the Java website. I am now experiencing additional problems such as Microsoft
Restore doesn't work anymore and I can no longer defrag my C drive. I really
don't want to do a clean reinstall if I can help it.
BTW, the installation error isn't just with Java as I have experienced
similar problems with other software but not all. Seems the windows installer
is the problem.

It is likely a permissions problem. If you have a shared folder with limited
access you may have explicitly removed admin/system accounts. By doing so,
the installer tries to run from an account which did have access to the file
and started to run it, but it turned the file over to a system account
"Windows Installer."

To solve the problem, give the root folder SYSTEM read access, and then try
the install again. Subfolders should inherit the needed permission.

Remember to review permissions when finished!

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.

I have gone to the root file which is the 'jre1.6.0_11c.msi file and clicked
on properties so as to change the permissions but can't see where I can
change it. I've done this before but either I'm not remembering how to change
the permissions (which is likely) or something else is wrong. Additionally, I
am the sole user of this PC so I'm the administrator but can' t seem to fix
this coninuing problem regardless.
BTW, I use windows xp pro sp3.

Navigate in explorer to the root of the drive. Right-click the label for C:\
and choose properties. Click on the Sharing tab. From there you should be
able to manipulate permissions, if you have adminsitrative rights to the
drive.

I've clicked on the sharing tab and can see I have network sharing marked as
well as allowing all network users to change my files. How is it that this
is a gateway to manipulating permissions? And I do have administrative
rights to the drive.

While I couldn't see where permissions could be manipulated under the sharing
tab, I tried what may be an alternative way. I went into control panel/
folder options and unclicked simple file sharing. Then I right clicked the c
drive/ permissions / security. I noted systems and administrator had full
control. Administrator was identified with my user name but my user name
listed below didn't have full control. I don't know if that's unusual or not,
nevertheless I clicked to give my user name full control and then hit apply.
But I get the waiting hourglass which hasn't yet gone away after 5 minutes of
wait. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree. Any other ideas?

Its fixed, but I'm not sure why my system is malfunctioning. The final fix
was unclicking the simple file sharing under folder options in the control
panel. Then after right clicking properties under the c root I used the
security tab to access control. I set full contol on both system and under my
own user name and then apply. I attempted a reinstall of the Java update, and
it failed as is expected but produced the Jre msi file that I might right
click on it access the security tab, add system which it automatically had
full control then, and hit apply. Then I just double clicked the jre msi file
again and it finished the install.

Now that I've completed a work around for my install problem, I'm going to
have to look into some of these other potential solutions for my other
problems. Thank you so much for your help with this issue.
