Sorry about the previous post. I was expecting a second screen for my post.
I am also experiencing the same problem. I strongly suspect that our
firewall does not let the application connect to the MS server. I have not
had this problem with the previous Antispyware application. Unfortunately,
there is no configuration option available in the "Windows Defender".

If autoupdate is restricted, and routed to SUS, this will cause the problem.
Windows Defender expects to get updates from WSUS (via autoupdate), or you
can manually go to WindowsUpdate if that is not blocked.

So will MS have an alternative if the Network settings prevent users from
using Windows Update website to get updates..?

No guarantees. There's a [MSFT] reply somewhere in these groups to the
effect that "presently" there is no manual download method available.

I wouldn't expect them to create an easily found way to work around the
desired wishes of the folks who administer large networks.

I should have also mentioned that there are messages in .install and
elsewhere with yesterday's date on them giving details of a manual update
method--look for Simon Zerafa as the sender.

I think you still need to be able to access windows update to have the files
available in the SoftwareDistribution folder.
