HELP NEEDED!!

I get "
Task 'mail.comcast.net - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC92) : 'Your
e-mail server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password in
your account properties. Under Tools, click E-mail accounts. The server
responded: -ERR user password must be specified'" when I attempt to login to
Comcast's mail server. If I login via the test button, the login is
successful. If I login to my email account via the Comcast webpage, I can
gain access with no problem. I have deleted my profile several times. I
have deleted the "PSSP" entry in the registry several times. What gives? I
keep getting prompted to add password to email login. with the above
mentioned error as the result. Has anybody experienced this issue before?
If so, please share your resolution with me. Any/All suggestions are
welcomed. I don't think the issue is with OL 2K3, but, with WinXP's
registry. I just resolved the issue of the "send/receive" button not
working. Again, if I use the test option in email acct. setup, the test
passes.

Blair,
I have exacty the same problem and have been unable to resolve it so far.
I did try the fix under note 290684 but this seems to be more a case of the
password being asked for each time rather than failing to connect.
I saw that someone else has discovered theat a blank password was being sent
in their case and this would fit what I see happening and the error given.
The stupid thing is that when I test the account settings the settings work
fine.

Note that I am actually able to recieve my mails via Outlook Express and to
send mail via outlook.
I can't send mail via OE, but that is down to a bad install I believe.

Let me know if you find a fix.

Hi Phil,

Have you heard anything on this issue? I am stumped, will continue to
reseach issue.

Absolutely nothing !

It sounds like there are just a few of us with the same problem, but no one
has offered any solutions yet.

I think I have tried all the fixes that other people use to solve "similar"
problems, but none of them is exactly the same and none have worked.

Phil,

I still haven't found a solution. I don think the issue is what Outlook. I
think a registry setting is corrupted. Problem is, I don't know where or
what that setting is.

I am not sure if this is much of an answer , As I tried everything mentioned
above.
I believe I was having this issue because I loaded 2 administrative accounts
during a fresh install. Then I made one of these accounts a Limited User.It is
on this account that I could not retain passwords to logon to my ISP.
I simply deleted the first account that I had changed and created another
Limited User account with the same name.It worked.
I hope this helps someone until the real registry answer is found.

Come on guys....one of you Microsoft or Outlook gurus must have an idea how
to solve this problem or at least what it is.

This is driving me nuts. Please have a think again about what the solution
could be.

Cheers

It seems like a fairly clear error message to me, but try enabling
diagnostic logging and examining the log for more information.

Brian,

The error maybe clear to you. It is kicking my ass trying to resolve this
issue based on this "fairly clear error message". If you can help with this
issue please do. I have included the log file from Outlook 2K3. Again, if
I test my username/password, I can successfully connect to my pop3/SMTP
servers.

Seems to me you're also convering this in another newsgroup. Stick to a
single thread, please.

Something is wrong in how the password is being transmitted to Comcast. If
this were happening to me, I'd start over from the beginning with a new mail
profile.

Brian,

I have done this several times.. Do you know where the password is
stored? I have also deleted the PSSP entry in the registry.

Sorry, no. Try mimicking a POP client from the Windows command prompt:

telnet mail.comcast.net 110 <-- you type
+OK (rwcrpxc56) Maillennium POP3/PROXY server #61
user blairwilson <-- you type
+OK Password required for "blairwilson"
pass yourpassword <-- you type
+OK Username/password combination ok
quit <-- you type
+OK comcast.net closing POP3 channel

Will give this a try. Thanks :)

I am having the same problem. I am trying to get mail from Earthlink using Microsoft Outlook and using Comcast. I can get the e-mail using Outlook Express but not Outlook. Problem started on January 10th. I tried resetting the password, deleting and re-creating the account, changing the password at Earthlink, disabling ZoneAlarm, etc., etc. I am beginning to think it's a problem with Comcast and Outlook.

I too am having this same issue.

I am a Network Engineer/ Exchange engineer, I feel that this problem must of
come frome some extrenal source. Malware or a Virus or something, too many
users are getting the identical error. I have two machines on a Switch Both
machines were sending and recieving just fine, I then move my laptop for a
few hrs. when I came back I had the error on the desktop, but not on the
laptop.

The strange thing is that when I killed the user profile and recreated my
account information, I then Did a test, the test was sucessful, however the
test message was not recieved in Outlook 2k3.

Thank god it is on personal pc and not a clients.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

The scoop with this.

You have to become a PLUS member in order to setup a POP client to check your yahoo email.

I think the idea here is that as long as you are not paying for the service, they want you to see the adds.

That said, if you can manage to get a Gmail account, you *can* check your email with a POP client for free. I personally like Gmail.

Comcast SMTP issue

I have the same problem and I can say this:

I haven't patched my machine in 2 years, so nothing has changed.
I haven't changed my password either, and can confirm via web-based e-mail.
I did move to a different city, but maintained my Comcast subscription. This is when the error started occurring. I don't think it's something on our end, but rather a failure to verify our credentials. (on Comcast's end).

yeah.

i don't fully understand what you are saying, but i do not think it is relevant to the main thrust of this thread.

i have an email account which works fine on occasion, definately allows pop download and is simply functional in every way.

And yet outlook suddenly decides to throw me a password input dialogue window (full of asterisks to suggest it already knows the password). whether i leave it or input the password afresh, and regardless of whether i leave 'remember this password' checked or not, it will not download the mail.

it has done this a few times. maybe tomorrow it will just start working again? i don't know. there is no microsoft exchange involved as far as i am concerned which the majority of your link talks about. it is hugely annoying.

the whole way through i can go to bt/yahoo webmail, login and see the emails so i know the account is alive and active. but its not my account, trying to sort this out for my dad who assumes because i can't fix my car, i can fix his pc. HELP!!!
