Hi,

I have been using Windows mail for a while now to access my email. I can
receive without difficulty but all of a sudden I cannot send anything. The
server connects but times out with the error message above. I know my server
settings are correct

smtp1.nhs.net Port 587

I have no antivirus installed at present and I hav tried deleting the
accounts and reentering them. I have not installed any updates between the
account working and not.

Any suggestions?

There is more to that error message than you have posted.

Subject 'test of new settings', Account: 'imapmail1.nhs.net', Server:
'smtp1.nhs.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 587, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number:
0x800CCC19

Basically what happpens is that if you send a message it comes up saying
connected but it never sends the message and eventually you get a timeout. It
does not make any difference increasing this timeout.

SMTP is usually on TCP port 25. Yes, my ISP EarthLink is on 587 for SMTP
too. Maybe, your user id and psw are not valid an more. I have has that
happen ,and I had the psw reset.

I run Vista FW and IPsec on Vista, and I forgot to configure IPsec to use
TCP 587, which was still using TCP port 25. I changed IPsec to use 587. You
sure something is not blocking 587?

0x800CCC19 TIMEOUT
Go to Tools | Accounts.
Select the account and click Properties.
On the Advanced tab increase the timeout slider to two minutes.

Email scanning by an anti-virus can cause this.
Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled.

Are you sure nhs.net wants SSL checked?

Hi,

I have no anti-virus installed as I stated. I have currently got all windows
security settings switched off (ie defender, firewall etc). I have my router
firewall switched off as well. I have no other software to block ports.
My username and password are correct and I can receive email through IMAP on
this account. 587 with SSL is the correct setting, I have checked this with
the roaming user guide provided by NHS.net. Increasing the timeout makes no
difference. When this works normally the connection is almost instant.

Any further suggestions?

I set up the wrong server how do i correct this to set up the same server you
have?
How do I get my fax to work it keeps saying error phone line (failed) when
faxing.

Cl,ick on Tools, then Accounts, then the account you want to modify,
then Properties. Search the tabs for what you want to change, and
change it. Then click on Apply and then OK.

I'm not familiar with the FAX options.

Do you have an account with nhs? The account has to be the proper one for
your email provider, usually the one you pay for an Internet connection.

Yes I do. It is a national service with 100,000's of users. I can access my
mail through webmail without difficulty and have previously had this setup
working through Windows Mail. It is only the last week that it has stopped
allowing me to send anything.

I know you do, I was replying to Angel734.

I have solved the problem. I had pending updates which had not completed
installation hence i did not think i had installed any updates. One of these
contained an alteration of access to port 587 as part of a security update.
Changing to using port 465 allows access to the server without problem. I
find this kind of error very frustrating from Microsoft because it takes a
lot of time and energy to solve so I hope this response helps someone else.

What does MS have to do with this? My ISP's SMTP server is on 587. All the
updates to this Vista machine, and it is current on the updates, have
nothing to to with changing from 587 to something else for SMTP nor altering
access to 587. If the port that the ISP's SMTP server is listening on is
now 465, it's because the ISP changed that port to 465. The standard SMTP
port is TCP 25. The reason an ISP chooses a different port other than TCP 25
is to stop the proliferation of spam mail from infected machine on its
network.

Show some kind of proof here that MS did anything to port 587. Show some
kind of proof here that MS has done anything in TCP/UDP port alteration for
an application listening on a port, expect for maybe its own servers.
