Error 0x800C0005

C

Chez

Running W2k Pro on stand alone computer. After updating to
SP4, started having problems with Windows Update. Checked
Windowsupdate log. Log shows error as:

Querying software update catalog from
https://a248.e.akamai.net/v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ge
tmanifest.asp (Error 0x800C0005)

Windows Update gives me the page Windows Update Error and
references a different error 0x800A138F. I tried all the
recommendations for solving this error, from Windows
troubleshooter and other users, without success. Nothing
like a wild goose chase to get your heart rate up.

Has anyone seen this problem before? If so, any
recommendations? Just pointing me toward the right
documentation is a help!

Thanks

Chez,

Are you running Spy Blocking software? Check your HOSTS file and make sure
you don't have any static IP entries associated with:

Windows Update or Akamai.net

The HOSTS file can be found in:
C:\Winnt\system32\drivers\etc

In order to view the HOSTS file you may need to associate the HOSTS file
with Notepad, to do so right click on the file and select "open" or "open
with" select Notepad from the list of programs. If the HOSTS file contains
a static IP address associated with Windows Update or Akamai, comment the
entry by adding the # sign at the beginning of the entry or delete the
entire line and save changes to the Hosts file.

Applications like web accelerators, Tweak Master DNS, Spyblockers, etc. can
add static IP entries for the Windows Update site into your HOSTS file which
cause Windows Update to fail.

You may also want to search the primary Windows Update newsgroup for
additional solutions to this error message.

Lucy,

Success!!!

Thanks a million for the help. I checked the Host file and
found the problem. The Akamai.net site my Windows Update
was trying to access had a static IP address. I commented
out the entry, saved, rebooted, and ran Windows Update.
Ran fine and now getting my updates.

It is instances like this that demonstrate the true value
of user bulletin boards and the people who care.

Once again, Thanks
