Error 0x80070006 when configuring Win2K Server

M

Michael Holberton

Hi,

I have just built myself a new standalone PC for home and database
development use.

When I first installed Win2K Server I wanted to setup Active
Directory, to learn about and use its securtiy features, but only got
part-way through it before realising I wanted another disk partition
created for the storing of the directory.

I've since installed the SP4 patch.

On Start-up or by using the Configure Your Server applet from
Administrative Tools, the Windows 2000 Configure Your Server dialogue
is activated. I select the "This is the only server in my network"
option and click on the Next button which displays an indication that
Windows will automatically configure this server as a domain
controller and set up Active Directory, DHCP, and DNS on your network.
I then click on the Next button again and it displays the domain names
I originally created. When I click the Next button again the Windows
Components Wizard starts up and I immediately get an error message
titled "Optional Networking Components" with the mesage reading "An
error occurred which prevented the Connection Manager Components
component from being installed or removed. The error was 0x80070006."
and only an OK button. After I click on the OK button it then proceeds
to try configuring some services like IIS and then reboots and when
Windows restarts it displays the same start screen for Configure Your
Server and if I attempt to retry the process the same results occur.

Can anyone give me any clues how to solve this problem please.

Regards Michael

I would reinstall while you can to not lose too much. There is no reason to fight with this while the install is still new.

Hi George and anyone else who can help,

I uninstalled 2 MS Security patches and then the SP4 patch. Error
0x80070006 stopped after that. The Windows 2000 Configure Your Server
dialogue still appeared after progressing through the different
prompts and rebooting.

I then reinstalled SP4 and tried again. No error when running the
Windows 2000 Configure Your Server dialogue but after the subsequent
reboot this dialogue still appeared.

I then reinstalled the Security patches one at a time and retried the
Windows 2000 Configure Your Server dialogue. Still no error but after
the subsequent reboots this dialogue still appears.

My educated guess from the little I have read so far(I have strained
eyes) is that DNS may need to be set up before Active Directory can be
setup but the aforementioned dialogue says that it will automatically
configure Active Directory, DHCP and DNS.

Using the DHCP administrative tool it appears that DHCP is basically
or partially configured. It has some IP addresses set.

Using the DNS administrative tool after the DNS Server is started it
appears that DNS is partially or incorrectly configured.(I had a play
around with lookup zones at one point.)

I have 2 onboard LAN Adapters on my Motherboard. Do they require
Network Addresses to be set in order for me to set up Active
Directory, DHCP and DNS for a standalone PC?

I have just noticed that the IP settings for the nvidia ethernet
controller Local Area Connection is "Obtain an IP address
automatically" whilst the 3com ethernet controller has "Use the
following IP address:" set on with an IP address of 10.10.1.1 and a
Subnet mask of 255.0.0.0 and it has "Use the following DNS server
addresses" set on but no entries in "Preferred DNS server" and
"Alternate DNS server".

What is the standard method for setting up these services and should I
be able to do it on a standalone PC. I only connect it to the internet
but there could also be a need to connect it to a Virtual Private
Network via the internet.

I've also included an event log of problems occurring during setup
below

Regards Michael

I would remove the WINS service in Windows Components and Quality of Service if you can.

Hi George,

Thanks for responding again.

I looked these up in help and I it appears I would have no use of them
in a standalone environment but how would uninstalling them affect the
configuring of Active Directory and DNS nad DHCP?

Regards Michael

Not at all. I'd be surprised if WINs is part of Active Directory. It may be but I really don't see the need for it. This will get rid of your WINs errors. The other one QoS well again not sure how it affects Active Directory. My experience with these two services is basically what you have experienced. I never install them. The DHCP Error is benign in your case. There is a knowledge base article on it. It is a bug. It really shouldn't happen.
