error 0x8001b0100 after (forced) update

After updating to Windows Defender 1.1.1347.0 I got the possibility to check
for new definitions.
I clicked the button "Check Now", but got an error:

Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x8001b0100.
No signature was present in the subject.

My definitions version appears to be very old,
vs. 1.0.0.0 created on 25-01-2006.
I want to load new definitions.

An uninstall followed by a re-install did not help.

How to continue?

Please go to Windows Update, and do an express scan and install everything
offered. You should see Windows Defender definitions, and perhaps other
prerequisite code as well.

I got: no high-priority updates availlable.
I expected this, because I try to be always up to date with all my software
(not only Windows), and had checked Windows Update (although set to
automatic).

OK - that moves us forward. Windows Defender definitions are carried by
AutoUpdate/Windows Update. So--with Windows Defender installed--that update
attempt should have at least notified you of available definitions.

I suspect that the answer to this could be found in an excerpt from the
%windir%\windowsupdate.log file--which can be opened in notepad and cut and
pasted back to this thread.

Is this a machine on a corporate or other institutional LAN, or is it a home
machine? If it is a home machine, was it a corporate or institutional
network member in the past?

To begin at the end: part of a home network of 3 times WinXP Pro SP2 with
ADSL gateway, Fast Ethernet, static addressing. Machine with 1GB memory, 2 *
160GB disk pus 240GB movable disk, many applications (Office 2003 Pro, Adobe
CS2, Delphi2006, VS2005, total length Add/Remove Program list: 240 programs).

WindowsUpdatelog is 1.5MB long, with regular updates to Defender definitions.

That looks good. I'm not sure what the error message indicates, but let's
see what the status is
tomorrow. There's no need to leave the machine on if that isn't your
routine--it'll happen at startup, I believe, if the 3 AM windows is missed.

Now, 7.30 UTC, "About Windows Defender" says:

Definition Version: 1.14.1637.1

Looks good, but still, when I then click on the button "Check for Updates"
in that same window I still get: unable to complete update: 0x8001b0100.
This does not seem a useful answer...

OK - It seems to me that this must be a generic AutoUpdate problem.

One approach is to do such an attempt to update via Help, About, and then
post the tail end of the log file covering just that attempt and we can look
at it to see whether there's more detail or other specific errors noted.

Does AutoUpdate work for other updates on your system?

I'm sure we covered this before, but you have applied all critical
updates--none hidden? In particular, Windows Installer 3.1 and any updates
to it, as well as Windows Genuine validation (not necessarily the
notification part--although I now recommend that as well)

I never had problems with Automatic Update.
I see the Microsoft Security Bulletins and read several bulletins from
WindowsITPro and am normally very much aware of when an update can be
expected and for what.
I regularly see the Windows Genuine validation and pass it without problems.
My Msiexec has version#; 3.1.4000.1823
I have one small problem: after each boot, Cumulative Security Update for
Internet Explorer for Windows XP (KB916281).

On your test: when attemting to update via Help>About, the get the
well-known message but nothing is appended to the WindowsUpdate.log.

To determine which version of Windows Installer is currently installed on
the computer, follow these steps: 1. In Windows Explorer, locate the
following file:
Msi.dll
This file is located in the Windows\System 32 folder.
2. Right-click Msi.dll, and then click Properties.
3. Click the Version tab. Note the file version number. . If the
version number is 3.1.4000.1823, the computer has Windows Installer 3.1
(v1) installed.
. If the version number is 3.1.4000.2435, the computer has
Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) installed.

The lack of anything new appended to the log is odd.

I think it may be worth pursuing the problem with the "stuck" update.

I'd proceed by downloading this patch as a separate item, saved to the
desktop or some other known location, and then running the downloaded file.
This should give you both more useable information as the update proceeds,
and perhaps a log file specific to this patch.

I have been silent for 2 days:

I have Ghost-restored my system volume to a restore point dd jul 30
Now I have all security programs updated without encountering any problem.

But...., I still have the KB916281-anomaly: install after every system restart
(luckely no after each hibernation'.

Hi Peter,

I had the same problem and was able to get support from Microsoft:

From your description, I understand that the updated definition files for
Windows Defender cannot be installed with error 0x800B0109 . If there has
been any misunderstanding, please let me know.

I fully understand the inconvenience this issue has caused. Please be
assured that I will do my best to assist you.

This issue can be caused by corrupted Windows Defender definition files. To
troubleshoot this issue, I suggest we perform the following steps and let me
know the result.

Step 1:
============
1. Click Start, click Run, type "appwiz.cpl" (without quotation marks) in
the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Select Windows Defender from the program list and click the Remove button
to uninstall.
3. Click Start, click Run, type "msiexec /x
{A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}" (without quotation marks, please also
note there are spaces after "Msiexec" and "/x") in the Open box, and then
click OK.

Step 2:
============
1. Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup utility from this
following link:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe
2. Run the utility from Start -> All Programs -> Windows Install Clean Up.
3. Select all Windows Defender related entries from the list (if there are)
and click Remove.

Step 3:

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Download and install Windows Defender from the following link and reboot
the computer:

3. Please go to Microsoft Update:
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/ and install the updates for
