erratic indents

While writing standard paragraphs of a novel, some with
dialogue, the auto indent feature sometimes kicks in for
no rhyme or reason I can figure. One moment I
hit "return" and then "tab" to start a new paragraph and
it's fine. Every so often, thought, I hit "return" and
it zips into an already-tabbed mode -- it's already
indented. I just want it simple simple simple. Can't
figure out how to turn the damn auto-whatever's going on
off. Tried HELP and various topics, none address the
issue. How can I get back to basics?

application.
