Erratic boot

Over the past few days the PC (with W2K) stops at the main MS page with
progress bar stopping at the end, yet not moving further. So far the only
remedy was a "hot boot" (Ctrl+Alt+Del does not work), then F8 to start with
either "Boot ... or Last good config", whichever would work.

Any ideas how to solve this? Thanks

I'd download and run the manufacturer's diagnostic tools. (disk and drive
controller)

LGC is a waste of time now. It's possibly a driver issue. Can you always
boot into Safe Mode without a problem?

Affirmative - although over the past few days, it either booted 1) A-OK
(=normally), 2) via "Boot LogOn". Weird indeed.
