Erratic behaviour with quick launch buttons changing size

When i click on my quick launch buttons, about 75% of the time, they
all halve in size and shuffle along the task bar, then immediately
expand again to their original position. If i repeat this 5 or 6 times
it stops happening and the button I'm trying to click responds.

It's as if the buttons are afraid of the mouse pointer ;-) Not a
very technical analysis, but it's the best reason I can come up with.
Is there any calming gel or therapy I can get for them?

I can't work out when this started, it didn't appear to be linked to
anything I did. It wasn't after installing a new program or changing
any settings etc. It just started.

I'm running XP Media Centre edition, and I have dual monitors running
off a GeForce 7600 GS.

Thanks in advance for your help.

It sounds like a malware problem..
Download and install Windows Defender, run a full scan. You should also run
a virus scan..
Keep us posted pls..

Please distinguish between the Quick Launch area of the Taskbar and the
Application Launch area of the Taskbar.

Are you talking about the area immediatedly to the right of Start? Or later
on down the TaskBar ... more close to the System Tray on the right side?

I downloaded and did a full scan with Windows Defender, but it gave me
the all clear.

My virus protection is up to date and has always been on.

Any other ideas ?

Oops, I'm sorry I am using the wrong term here. I mean the open
applications area where a button comes up for each window I have open
on the screen. I apologise for that. Is this area known as the
Application Launch area ?

That would explain why I was unsuccessful with my google search, I
guess.

It could be a cache issue or hardware acceleration.

Added info:

To proceed: Go to: Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View/Show Hidden
File and Uncheck Hide Protected Operating System Files.

Delete Icon Cache. It is located here:

IconCache.db
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data

To clear and reset icon cache:

Right click the Desktop/Properties/Appearance/Advanced. Use the item
drop box and choose Icon. Change the pixel number by one. Ok your way
out.

Increase Icon Cache (Line 121)

Correct/Repair the Icon View (Line 4)

Tip:

Add Icon Cache Size to Folder Options/View (Line 166)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

You may also want to try line 157 and then Save Settings on Exit (54):

Good luck and keep us posted.

Sorry Kelly, i was using the wrong term, when I said quick launch I
should have said another term is it taskbar button ? I mean the button
that represents each program/task that is currently running in a window
on the desk top.

The quick launch buttons all work correctly , so your icon adjustments
wont help.

Any idea how to stop the running tasks buttons from halving their size?
