Hi,

When I right click on the cd-rw drive icon in 'my
computer' the 'erase this cd-rw' option is missing, any
ideas? I have XP Pro.

Okay, I'll snag the easy ones.

- Is the tray closed (i.e., inserted)?

- Is there actually a disc in the CD-RW drive?

- If so, is it a CD-RW disc?

- Have you yet checked Microsoft's own support site for relevant
articles, like http://snipurl.com/6men?

And I can't remember the number of times someone has asked why on a
reboot they get a message that NTLDR is missing - because they left a
non-bootable floppy in the A: drive! Had a tech buddy work on his
computer for month because he couldn't get the AGP video card to work
(but a PCI video card did work). He had not pushed the AGP video card
*all* the way down into the slot. It happens.

Is it a CD-RW disc (or just a CD-R disc)? Have you tried a different
one? Is the minimum write speed for the CD-RW disc slower than the
fastest write speed for the CD-RW drive? If the disc says, for example,
"16X-24X" then it won't work on an CD-RW drive that maxes out at 8X for
rewrite mode.

Are you running any UDF (universal data format) drivers, like DirectCD
or InCD?

Did you read the KB article? Did you check if the drive maker has a
firmware update?

How many times have you written to this particular CD-RW disc (if others
work but only this one fails)? You can rewrite a maximum of 1000 times
(that's what Verbatim says). If that particular disc won't rewrite
after some significant number less than 1000 then chuck it to experience
in finding the occasional bad disc. Out of 100 discs, even with top
brands, I usually find 2 to 5 are bad.

If you have installed third party CD burning software, that will have
taken over (eg Nero on , oddly, the Recorder menu). Of not, go to My
Computer, r-click the drive, Properties, Recording page and check
'Enable recording'
