Epson Twain Driver

Just purchased an epson 3170. Installed easily and worked at first but on
about the 3d scan the software said that I needed to "install the supported
twain driver".
12 hours later I have followed all instructions on epson and newsoft sites
and still no available twain. This involved removing all installed newsoft
and epson software.Removing .log file rebooting. Reinstalling all software,
reinitializing the scanner still same message. Did this again and in
addition removed all twain and twunk files, all epson references in the
registiry. Still didn't work. Did all again and in addition reinstalled SP4
on top of my Win2K. Still no go. Have applied all available upgrades and
patches and newsoft's single purpose reg cleaner. Even downloaded and
installed the British version (1.2) of the Epson Twain drivers in addition
to US versions 1.5 and 2.54. Installed Vuescan and it worked immediately but
Vuescan twain does not seem to be available to Photoshop.
System is two month old new install of Win 2Ksp4. Hardware 2.8P4/1G/USB2.
The problem I imagine is some reference buried in the Windows reg. that is
not removed. I am at wits end. Must have rebooted system 25 times today. See
on the net that others have had a similar problem but have not seen where a
solution was found. Certainly the answer is not on the epson or newsoft
site. Anyone have suggestion other than completely reinstalling windows or
getting another scanner.
Thanks
Howard

Howard,

I had the same problem with the Epson multifunction RX500 and had a long
session with newsoft. They passed me off to Epson.

I haven't gotten mine working either, although Vuescan recognized it right
away. The ABBYFineReader will use the Windows WIA driver if that's
installed; I found that out along the way as well. But you can't get into it
through the Epson Panel without the Epson driver -- you have to find the
program itself.

I posted this problem here some time ago, and no one responded. There are
some other newsgroup references to it, but I haven't found anyone who'd
reached a satisfactory solution (or at least managed to get the Epson driver
to work).

Epson's website doesn't seem to offer any solution, either, and getting
through to them by phone is tough.

You might also try to download the free trial version of Silverfast SE. It
allows TWAIN access via Photoshop so it could help you determine if the
problem is isolated to EpsonScan.

Yes I did this. Siverfast SE and AI both work fine as does vuescan. When it
was working I kind of liked the Epson interface with simple copying and the
couple of scans I did were fast and good enough for my purposes. Really
amazes me that these other twains load properly and are recognized but that
I cannot seem to get the epson twain to be recognized without reinstalling
windows.
Since my last post I have searched down every twain and twunk, every epson
reference down to the registry level and removed them. The only thing I
don't understand is my inability to remove Twain_32 folders and subfolders
in Winnt directory. It says that the system is "using" them even when all
programs are shut down. I suppose I could boot in DOS and remove that
folder. Also after I removed all the Twains and Twunks I could find on my
system when I rebooted there they were again in the NT directory. Where did
they come from?

In great aggrevation

On Windows XP SP1, the twain drivers are cached in hidden system folder
%SystemRoot%\system32\dllcache
You have go into Safe Mode to remove the files.
%SystemRoot% is C:\Windows on most systems.

Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any damage you may do if you use my
advice.
BE VERY CAREFUL. You can destroy the system.

Two possible fixes for this:

1) It is not the EPSON references that are messing things up but an
older .inf file. To fix this simply make sure that the driver is
installed, then go to Device Manager access the Scanners Property
Sheet and use the Update Driver option from the Drivers tab.
Point the Wizard to a 'Specific Location', the location being
%root%:\Windows\Inf. Inf is a hidden folder
so you will have to select to view Hidden Files and Folders in the
Folder Options.

2) In your Temp folder (%root%:\Documents and Settings\%your
Username%\Local Settings\Temp) you will find the following files:
Twunk***.MTX
Twain***.MTX
Twain.log
Delete these then open you scanning application again and try to
access the scanner.
