Epson Papers and the HP 7960

I have an Epson Photo 870 which is now becoming my plain paper colour
printer. For photographs I will be using an HP Photosmart 7960. I have
3 boxes of Epson Heavyweight Matte Paper left over. Has anyone had
experience using this paper in the 7960?

I have an older HP printer (deskjet 6122, which is a photoret III printer, the
7960 is two generations ahead), and it prints fine on Epson Heavyweight Matte.

The matte inkjet papers, in general, are pretty accepting of most inks.
You may find you need to adjust the amount of ink on the paper, by
darkening or lightening the printing, however.

It just so happens that I took a course about this just this past week and
the statement that is made is that "HP printers are designed to use HP
papers for optimum print quality and longitivity." The HP papers are
actually made up of 6 layers. Those layers have individual functions and
one of them is actually that each layer stops a certain color from bleeding
lower into the other layers. Such as Red that might be at layer 2 and
Yellow at 3 and so on. The actual top layers of the paper are what they use
for the fade resistance. The same holds true when you use HP inks. This is
not just a marketing scheme for ensuring HP only products but actually
benefits the customer for the length of time the prints are useful.
So, the answer is sure that paper will work but do you really want those
prints to last ? If so, then you want to use HP products only. If you
don't care then well, that's up to you. I would care. Sure, I've bought
Imation paper in the past and I still have the prints around but how long
will they last ? No one knows. Remember, with HP Premium + paper and the
58 Photo cartridge this printer is rated (by Wilheim research) to last 73
years. (sure under glass etc..) And if you buy a new HP printer (8150 or
8450 ) with the new dye based inks then they are rated to last 114yrs.

I've had poor results with Epson papers in my HP 930C printer. The colors
are far off. Try a sheet, and see how it looks.

If you search for the 'Great Paper Chase' thread on www.dpreview.com
printing forum, I think you'll find that Epson paper did very well on the
HP7150, which uses the same colour cartridges as the 7960.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences and opinions. My main
concern was whether or not the Epson paper would work in the HP since
I have several packages left over from my old Epson 870. I am also
using the Ilford papers; but judging from Steve m's comments, the HP
papers are worth looking at.

Thanks again,

If you have them, why not just try them?
