Anyone have success setting the Epson R1800 for making high quality B&W
photos using only black ink/inks?

I thought that the R2400 was best (better?) suited for B&W prints?

Yes, the 2400 would be a better printer for B&W but I'd hate to throw away
my R1800.

I tried using QuadTone RIP on my R1800
and wasn't happy. Images were grainy
and showed lots of banding.

But then I tried it with the Epson driver
and was very pleasantly surprised -- but
*not* by printing with black ink only.

All I did was to desaturate the image
completely. It remained, and was printed
as an RGB image -- using standard ICC
color management. In other words, the
printer didn't know it was a "BW" image,
and it really wasn't...
