Epson 880 - paper won't feed.

Hi,
I have an Epson 880 printer. We had not used the printer for about a
year, until today. I replaced the black ink cartridge and loaded in
some paper. I printed one test page, but only the magenta printed, and
even that was faint.
I installed the latest printer utility, did some cleaning procedures
through that, but now the paper will not load. I have tried shutting
off the printer, pressing the paper load button, adjusting the paper
guide, and trying different paper. I also moved the lever on the right
when you open the cover.
The paper will try to load, but then the red light comes on near the
paper button.
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Shannon

It looks like you are a candidate for a Canon IP4300.

There is a white wheel that is shrouded beneath a dark gray cover that feeds
the paper. A thin clear glassine flexible window covers it. Carefully remove
the plastic window temporarily and clean the roller. It may be slipping on
the paper and be causing a misfeed. I would use alcohol on a light rag for
the cleaning, though I've read of something better within this NG. Also try
turning the paper around on the other side. to give a different edge for the
infeed roller than what you were originally feeding into the paper path.
The other thought is that there is an obstruction in the paper path.
Tilt the printer back to see if there is anything in the way that keeps the
paper from continuing.
As for the printhead, you should eventually be able to get the 880
running again. All cartridges should be changed for new ones. Epson
recommends this after being in the printer for 6 months, as the ink oxidizes
and thickens, making it harder to get through the jets. While the printhead
is moved to the far left for the cartridge change, take ten drops of Windex
and eyedrop it onto the docking sponge. Once done use the printer software
and run up to 5 cleaning/nozzle check cycles in a row. If you start to get
color but all jets are not coming through then let the printer sit, turned
off for a couple of hours and try it again. Eventually you should get
complete spray through, though it could take a bit of time.

In the event you are still having a complete nozzle check pattern coming
through after a few days write to Art Entlich
(e-mail address removed) at e-printerhelp at (@) mvps.org [replace
the word "at" with the symbol and get rid of spaces. He can e-mail you a
wonderful pamphlet that will give you additional information for clearing
the head that is helpful in getting the head clear.

I've used the 880 for probably 6 years now at home and at school (we
have a dozen of them running) and have found it to be one of the best
general use printers Epson ever made. They give very fine photos, are cheap
to run using decent quality third party cartridges, and provide realtively
quiet printing. Hope you get yours running.

Any ideas?

Pencil, rubber band, cigarette end, sugar cube, whichever object in
the paper tray?
