Epson 4990 vs Epson V700

G

gh

I was looking for scanners...it seems Epson is upgrading its line and
the 4990 will become second to the V700 and V750 pro. Seems the diff
btwn V700 and V750 is more software and wet mounting.

Comment?

Anybody bought a V700 (avail this month-march) or V750 (tho 750 not
avail til may)?

Just ordered the V700. I'm hoping the new model will be good right out
of the box??? I'm replacing an Expression 1600, a nice solid pro level
scanner that died.

As I said in the other thread I've just bought a V700 and it arrived
yesterday.

I've only played with it so far but first impressions are good. I
bought it to replace an Epson 1650 Photo because I wanted to get a bit
more serious about scanning some MF and 35mm negatives and slides.

I've only installed the Epson software at the moment and they seem to
have cleaned up a few of the rough edges compared with the 1650, I
found it very easy to use. The only thing I still can't quite work
out is what the 'target size' menu is telling me - is it purely to
make the marquee match the proportions of the destination?

I have scanned a mix of things to try it out, some B&W negatives in
various formats and some slides (2"x2" mounts but not 35mm). The
scanner did a very good job on the negatives producing acceptable
pictures from some very muddy negatives. It also did pretty well at
sorting out the horrible colour cast that has appeared over the years
on the old slides I tried (they are Adox C18 from the 1960s). This is
just the sort of thing I wanted, production of acceptable results
easily from rather poor negatives and slides, I don't need the
ultimate in resolution, it's not there to start with.

I'll maybe report further when I've done some more.

Please do! There are very few reviews so far.

Indeed, for example it would be nice to see some color negative scans.

Some new pages on:

Thanks, I'll read some further.

I haven't scanned many colour negatives yet on my V700. The only ones
I have done are some 20 or so year old 110 negatives. Since there is
no film holder for 110 I just put them on the scanner glass and placed
the 'film placement frame' around the edge. Considering the rather
poor quality of the originals the scanner did a pretty good job. All I
had to do was use the marquee to mark out each frame and then let it
scan at the default settings and I got acceptable scans of all the
negatives.

What would be nice is a way to place non-standard negatives at the
right distance from the glass for best focus, it would also be nice to
have a way of placing them accurately perpendicular to the edges to
avoid having to do any rotation.

If the film is flat, it may be possible to put them in the next larger
film strip holder. One side will be supported (two for the first image)
at the design height above the glass.

I have used this trick to scan Minolta 16 negs

An alternative is to put them in slide mounts.

What is the 'film placement frame'?
I didn't get that with my V700.
