Epson 3880 question

Today I took delivery of a new Epson 3880. As described in the manual the
initial ink drop was appreciable, much of the initial ink obviously ends up
in maintenance cartridge, which the indicator shows is about 70% full.
However, when I look at the cartridge the waste ink is only in the central
region - there's lots of unused absorbent material.

If the tank indicator reads full (and stops the printer working) can I fool
it by resetting the chip? Inkrepublic suggests taping over one of the chip
contacts in the 3800 - is this likely to work for a 3880?

Gee, what a system, eh? Sell the printer on its great large cartridges,
but not only use much of them up during startup procedure, but also dump
the ink into the maintenance cartridge which you also have to pay to
replace.

What a printer!

Except Gillette usually gave you the blade holder for free, soemtimes
with a couple of free blades included, the first blade wasn't pre-dulled
so it got used up faster, the blade had two sides that could both be
used, and they didn't charge you for a used shaving creme holder which
would shut the razor down once it was full.
