envelopes on Works 2002 and OE Express "drafts"

Maureen

I have been given a Dell XP computer with Works 2002, after using Win 98 for
over 8 years. It does not seem possible to type simple envelopes to go with
my letters on this Works/Word program. I get "login failed" and something
about Microsoft Exchange. No one can tell me how to write envelopes on this
program. (Both Win 98 and Vista have a simple program.) What's the answer
for typing individual envelopes? Do I need a different program? I have asked
over a dozen people and no one uses it and quit trying in disgust, so I have
no help. ( I do not have the XP on line yet-still using Win 98 to ask this
question!)

Also on Outlook Express, the "save" button doesn't work. Nothing will save
to drafts while I am typing an e -mail. Do I need to download a new OE
program for this older XP computer? Surely it is supposed to work or the
"save" wouldn't be there!

These are features I have used a lot on Win 98 and I don't want to be
without them when I install the XP computer to the internet. HELP!

HELP!

Used computer - format it and install everything fresh - the configuration
of the applications are obviously not setup for you and you cannot be 100%
sure what the last owners did.

The computer was cleared by the original owner, reloaded through service pack
3 and fully updated. These are features he says he never did use, so we don't
know if they ever worked. I have no clue what to do now.

Again...
*You* format it and load it fresh and clean.

Unless you sat with the owner and reloaded with them - I'd still say you
have no idea what has/has not been done.

It sounds to me like it was setup from some image - not a clean install.

I'll repeat what Shenan said: "format it and install everything
fresh." Whatever the original owner did doesn't count.

The others are right! What did the previous owner give you regarding a
Windows XP CD? If you were not given a CD what is the Dell model? It is
is possible you may have a hidden system partition. If you can provide
the model number I may be able to locate a USER Guide / Manual.

Otherwise you can try troubleshooting the problems using Event Viewer.
You will likely need help interpreting their meaning.

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

At one time I used Microsoft Works but a much earlier version dating
from 1993. I used that for 8 years to print envelopes. According to the
User's Guide of that time you need to:
Create an envelope document.
Insert database placeholders.
Set margins and the envelope size.

The Word component will be used for these tasks.

You create a database for the names and addresses using the Spreadsheet
component.

I can provide more detailed instructions.

What is your printer make and model. Is it capable of printing
envelopes?

Hope this helps.

Back-up any personal data, then do a format & clean install of Windows.
Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT fix this!

cf. http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html#steps

After the clean install, you'll have the equivalent of a "new computer" so
take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting
the machine to the internet or a network and before using a USB key that
isn't brand-new or hasn't been freshly formatted:

Thanks Gerry, but the Works 2002 envelope program is VERY different from the
Win 98 Works 2000 program or the current Vista program, which seems to have
gone back the the older version. What is packed with Dell's 2002 computer is
Works 2002 and for envelopes it just brings up a window to fill in the
address but the "book" icon won't connect with the address book. Instead it
says "login failed. Sign on to Microsoft Exchange to access address book. "
No one uses it, that I have talked to because we don't know how to do it.I
have contacted over a dozen people about the envelope program. Previously,
Works/Word just brought up and envelope in the size you specify, and you
clicked "insert address" and that is what the new Works program does on
Vista, too. However, for several years, Works envelpoe program has been
useless. I have a Lexmark printer which prints the addressed envelopes I
make on my Win. 98 computer but it has no software to do it without the works
program.
