Hello,

Is there any way the "Delivery Point Barcode" can be printed at the
bottom of the address which seems to be the sensible way to do it?

First of all, there is no requirement that the POSTNET code be at the bottom
of the address or envelope. USPS regulations are quite clear on this.

But it can be done (though not through the Envelopes and Labels dialog); you
will need to learn how to use the BARCODE field. For a single address, you
have to bookmark the ZIP code or the whole address and add the bookmark name
to the BARCODE field. Alternatively, you can insert the ZIP code as "literal
text" in the BARCODE field. For more, see the Help topic "Field codes:

The postal sorting machines really don't care whether the barcode is
above or below the address (visit www.usps.gov and look for the
Domestic Mail Manual's section on addressing).

If you want it below, click the Add to Document button in the
Envelopes dialog, and manually move the barcode field.

You can save a pre-formatted envelope document as a template (.dot
file) and create envelopes from it by clicking File > New instead of
using the Envelopes dialog.

above or below the address (visit www.usps.gov and look for the

Isn't it a shame that Word places the barcode at the top of the
address while 99.9 % of all address have the barcode at the bottom.

Take a look at all of the envelope you receive in the mail and see
where the barcode is located.

While the USPS doesn't require it to be placed at the bottom, when I
send an envelope with the barcode at the top of the address, I feel
silly and kind of inferior.

At the least it seems that Word would give you the option in an easier
way.

Just another major difference in Word and WordPerfect.

OK, I looked. Although much of the bills and junk mail I receive does
have the barcode below the address, it's above the address on my bank
statement, my brokerage statement, and even a thank-you note for a
donation to a national charity, as well as the address block on nearly
every magazine I subscribe to. In other words, it just doesn't matter.

You shouldn't feel silly or inferior because of something so minor,
and I don't think Word has anything to apologize for either. I
certainly don't see it as a "major" difference from WP. If you want to
talk about major differences, we're still waiting for MS to get
automatic paragraph numbering fixed, something that's been driving the
attorneys and the professional documentation writers crazy for
years...

To add to what Jay has said, most of the bar codes at the bottoms of
envelopes have been added by USPS sorting equipment. It adds them even if
you have a bar code above the address (and often even if you have one at the
bottom of the envelope). Bar codes are not *required* for any first-class
mail except to qualify for bulk mailing rates. Ordinary personal mail is
processed by sorting equipment that reads the address and applies the bar
code.
