entire document re-formats instead of only highlighted text

Help! Likely this is a virus, but I don't know how to get rid of it. In a
Word document, every time I try to bold, underline, italicize, indent, etc
(any formatting!), the entire document changes. To fix it, I have to hit
Undo. This then gives me the format I want, but what a pain!!!

Any ideas? Thanks!

No virus, just Word thinking it knows what you want.

Thank you!!!!!!!! I thought I tried everything, including asking an
instructor, but nothing had worked. This did the trick. I may stay sane for
another few weeks now.
