Entire document changes

When I highlight a word or sentence of a document and then
make any format change (bold, underline, etc) to any word
or sentence in the document, the entire document changes
to that format. Then when I click undo, the document
reverts to the original and correct format, except for the
one word or sentence I highlighted. It does not do this
when I highlight part of a word.
I must have some control set that is causing this.
Anyone have any suggestions?
