Entering numbers

I'm entering long numbers on an Excel 2000 spreadsheet in
a cell set for number format. When I enter a long number,
such as a credit card number (16 digits) Excel changes the
last digit on my number to a 0! I have tried reformatting
the number, but no matter what I do it switches to 0
unless I format the cell as text. What's the deal? If
the number is 15 digits, there is no problem.

The latest versions of Excel have a 15-digit precision
maximum. The only way to display the number is in text
format or using in the exponent format (General and
Scientific formats). I'm afraid those are your only
options...
