I have a notebook with a 80GB hard disk, CDROM drive, 4in1 card reader.
The problem is that on a clean install the 4in1 card reader is assigned
drive C:
CDROM assigned drive D:
hard disk assigned drive E:
is there a pre or a post way of re-assigning the hard disk letter back to c:
Normally boot drives cannot have the letter reassigned.
Thanks

After your OS is installed, you're stuck with the system
drive letter. Attempts to change it will result in an unstable
system.

If you have the time then try a clean install without the card-reader
attached to the PC and you 'should' find that your hard drive gets assigned
the drive letter C:

Can you disable the reader in BIOS setup or detach it?

I fixed it by installing the hard disk into another system, deleting the partition & creating the partition size I want with no data on it. Moved it back to the notebook - XP install recognizes the existing partition & automatically assigned drive C to it. Used the existing partition & reformatted & continued the install.
Note: 4in1 card reader cannot be disabled via the BIOS or any other method
(imbedded).
Thanks to all who replied..

Actually, it can probably be disconnected physically by
opening the laptop. But don't do it if the laptop is under
warranty. The only issue that this situation imposes might
be the installation of applications that seek out only
Drive C.

Try booting your notebook from the Windows XP installation CD again
and select new install. Does setup still assign C: to the card reader?
If a primary partition already exists on the hard drive, setup should
assign C: to it before assigning drive letters to other devices such
as the CD-ROM.
