Enormous Outlook 2K3 Address Book Headache

A

Andrew Johnston

I just upgraded to Outlook 2K3 from 2K and dragged mp .pst from my old
machine to the new one with 2K3 on it. My contacts are all there, but when
I click on the "to" button on a blank email, I get a message saying "The
address list cannot be displayed, the contacts folder associated with this
address list cannot be opened," yadda yadda. I've seen various fixes
posted, but none of them seem to work with Outlook 2K3. This is a huge pain
in my ass as I have to send out some very important emails tonight, so I'd
be thrilled if anyone could tell me what I need to do to correct this.

If you right click on the contact folder, select properties, outlook address
book tab, is the box ticked to use it as an address book? (Also don't
forget to open the address book (ctrl + shift + b), select tools | options
and verify that it is set to be used for auto-resolution.)

The box to use the contacts folder as an address book was not checked, so I
took care of that. However, when I hit ctrl + shift + b, I get the same
"the address list could not be displayed..." dialog box that comes up when
I press the "To..." button in a blank email.

okay lets try this...

Tools | Email Accounts | View/Change address books | highlight Outlook
Address Book | change button. Remove all address books you see here. OK
out until you get back to the main interface. Right click on contacts
folder and select properties | outlook address book and enable the folder
for use as an address book. OK out. Open address book (ctrl + shift + b)
and select Tools | options. Set your options in the two dropdowns + the
order below.

if this fails, i would go the route of a new mail profile via the mail
applet in the control panel (don't copy the existing one) and delete the old
one.
