Enlarging an existing disk partition

I have installed a new disk and copied the smaller old disk to it. The size
of the new disk is 160 GB the old 40 GB. The patition has remained ar 40GB
on the new disk and I would like the new disk to hold one partition of 160
GB. Can this be done under Windows XP (HOME). Thanks, Jason Sachs.

Third party utilities can do this, such as Partition Magic. Make sure that
whichever one you choose can dynamically resize the partition
non-destructively. This means it will not damage the data on the partition,
although it would be both wise and strongly recommended to do a backup
first, just in case...

I use BootItNG............froma DOS floppy.
There is a 30 day trial version which you download and expand to a floppy.
Restart the system with the floppy and do NOT install...it will then start
from the floppy and the Partition Work screen will come up.It will show your
HD with the 1 partition and the rest as unallocated space. You Can format
that space and create a partition or you can divide that space into more
partitions and format.
When done exit the program and remove the floppy before system reboots.
This program has never destroyed any data on my system...but play it safe.

No need to buy these softwares for your partition. If you have the 98
bootable disc, you can create the partition. Put the Windows 98 Floppy or CD
in their drives. Then after the BIOS Boot the setup launches. Below the
screen there are shortcuts to DOS etc. Press shift+F5 to launch the DOS. Type
Fdisk and press enter. Some screens will appear before you can create the
partitions. Yes is recommended. Then
launch the first 1st option - create Primary DOS Partition, Extended
Partition, Create logical drive. If there is an Existing Primary DOS
Partition and Extended Partition, you can start making up your partition. If
not, create the primary DOS Partition and Extended DOS Partition then select
create logical drive. After verification, it will ask you for the partition
space. Type your size in percentages according to your remaining space and
then press enter. After your Logical Drive has been created, you can exit
Fdisk by pressing Escape. After that, take out your Windows 98 CD or Floppy
and reboot your computer. Your partitions must be created now. If you have
any problems regarding this, I will check this post again.

Note that the steps that I gave are only for creating a new Disc partition.
If you want to expand a disc, you'll have to backup the files in it, delete
the partition and then create a new partition according to the steps that
I've given in the previous post. It is always a good idea to backup the files.

Even less need to use a Windows 98 Startup Floppy and fdisk. You can do
all that with the Windows XP Disk Management tool. But you CANNOT
enlarge an existing partition on a basic disk with Microsoft disk tools,
you have to use third party solutions for this.

And if you had used a decent 'clone' app, eg True Image it could have done
this for you during the clone operation

Doing as suggested in this post will destroy all the data on the hard drive.
It is better to use one of the other utilities suggested in this
thread...less work and time involved.
