Does anyone know if it is possible to create a table of contents so
that on the left side of the page is english and the right side of the
page is the french translation.
I can create this manualy using tables but would like a faster way with
the table of contents feature if possible.
I am using Word 2003.
The Table of Contents feature will certainly let you generate multiple
TOCs. The key to the problem is: how to differentiate the entries so that
each TOC contains only the one set of entries.
the answer is that the TOC is generated by a TOC field, and you can put
switches in the field to designate how the TOC should be generated. Look
up TOC field in Word's Help.
For example, if both the English and the French headings that make up the
TOCs are in the document text, format them using two different styles
(Heading 1 and HeadingF 1, for example). Then tell the one TOC to use
Heading 1 and the other HeadingF 1. (You can specify which styles are to
be used, and whether the TOC should pick up outline levels and/or TC
fields as well behind the "Options" button in the Insert/References/Table
of Contents box.)
Or, if both sets of headings aren't part of the document text, then you
can use TC fields for the one set and have the one TOC pick up only TC
fields.
If this doesn't get you going, you need to describe in more detail how
the document is set up.
