enforce input mask when tabbing into control

I have a text box with an inpute mask for zip codes. When I click in
the control, the input mask will control and limit the data entry to 10
characters. If I tab into the control, I can enter many more than 10
characters. How can I make the input mask enforce the limits/format on
the data entry for the control when I tab into it?
