Is there any good encryption freeware available similar to Kremlin Blowfish
etc? Sorry, but I am a bit of a novice in this respect.

It sounds like a good idea to secure one's PC while away.

Helo Saxman,

i use Blowfish Advanced CS (EN-DE) since several years without problems.
It is a very flexible program.

You could use a TrueCrypt[1] container (folder/partition/hard disk) to
store anything you'd want secured. You would need to enter the passphrase
when you want to open it but once that's in it acts just like a normal
folder/partition. It supports lots of different encryption algorithms and
can do a benchmark (speed test) to help you decide which is best for your
machine.

I like SafeGuard Private Crypto (freeware for private use)

# Implements the state-of-the-art encryption algorithm AES
# Secure wipe function
# Optional encryption of entire directory trees
# Secure password logging
# Protects against brute force attacks by increasing response times each
time the user enters the wrong password
# Keys are generated from the password entered by the user
# Option to generate self-extracting files
# Data compression

and Blowfish Advanced CS

and Quick: Crypt 1.0
(Homepage only mentions commercial version but older freeware version
available) Uses Blowfish for the encryption algorithm.

I like dsCrypt. No mess, small 25k unzipped (14k zipped). Just press
space bar to change the action encrypt or decrypt. Then, just drag and
drop all your files into the always-on-too window. Small enough to go
in a USB stick (USB sticks have so much space now that this is no
longer a concer, but I like my freeware utilities and programs small).
no registry settings, no ini file, nothing. Just encrypt or decrypt. I
have been using it for one year, no problems.

The one thing I am not happy with is the fact that it changes the
file(s) date (only modify, not create date), whereas Blowfish Advanced
CS keeps the file(s) date before encryption. Nice. I am testing
Blowfish Advanced CS. So far I like it. But dsCrypt has worked so well
for me. I guess this happens when you have so many excellent freeware
out there to choose from.

Private Crypto also have a free version for PDA.
This version(1.x) is older than the PC version(2.x), so there's a
compatibility issue. I might be wrong, but I think it is that encrypting a
file in v2.x doesn't allow decrypting it in v1.x.

I've used Private Crypto for some years now on both my computer and
PDA(iPAQ).
