I copy some encrypted files from one computer to another user profile. However, I cannot gain access. It is saying that access denied. What can I do to resolve this problem. I tried the standard things as; on the advance tab uncheck the encrypt contents box.
Thanks

did you also export and import the private key?

I did not use a private key. The only thing I did during the initial encryption was to use the option on the folder. I did not create a key. Does it matter.

Actually you did create a public/private key pair when you selected to use
encryption.
You need to read the whitepaper (at the link in David's response) to
understand the impact of what you have done as well as the use of the
recovery agent etc. and what not to do until you have exported the keys and
so on.

Follow the info in the paper, or links below, to export the
key/cert from the originally encrypting account and then to
import into the account which should now have access.
Be aware that you should be talking about two machines
that are both XP or both W2k, and that are at the same level
of service - doing otherwise requires further steps.
When you import be certain that you do not select to have
all access prompt you on use - that choice will not work.

Do you think the computer can somehow "See" you and recognize you???
You moved the file to another profile. As far as XP is concerned, that
is a different user who is not authorized to decyrpt the file.

I can not understand why people would do something permannent to thier
files such as encryption without fully understanding how it works.

In your case, you are lucky. You still have the orginal profile with
the encryption/decryption keys. You can still recover your data.
