Encrypted Files, New XP Install, Have Old Install, Help Decrypt Please

G

Guest

Today I did a clean XP install on my system. I realized after the install that some of my backed up personal files were encrypted in the Windows Backup file that I had created. Under the new XP install these files are inaccessible

I still have a Ghost image of the old install stored on another HDD. I can extract files out of that Ghost image using Ghost's "Image Explorer". Are there certain files (or a certain proceedure) that I might recover out of the Ghost image that would allow me to access the encrypted files under the new XP installation? If there is can someone please help

Thank you.

Hi

As you have access to the user profile folders for the user that
encrypted the files and if you remember the password for the user
that encrypted the data, you might be able to save the files.

Take a look at this site for more details:

The easiest way would be to use the Ghost image and then restore the
data.
Otherwise it may get complex.

See this link before you use EFS again:

Your most simple, direct, and time-saving approach would
be to take an image of the new system, then reimage the old
back on, boot into it, log in, and get your files in the clear.
Then image back to the new install.
