I can see a usb card reader in disk management
when I click on it to assign a drive letter to it, I get an error message
that this device is not enable, reboot to enable it.

that doesn't work.....

so how can I manually enable a USB device

Thanks

Perhaps try Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, and check its
properties there - maybe you can update its driver there too, if needed.

What kind of card reader ?
- memory card ?
- smart card ?

Who is the manufacturer ?

When you go to Device Manager, are the associated device drivers properly installed ?

it is a GE 11 in 1 card reader with 4 slots.
also tried some generic card reader which also didn't show up in my
computer

under device manager, yes they show up there as generic card reader
devices. the USB root hubs show up,

the card readers show up under disk management, but with no drive letter
assigned to them, but if i try to assign a letter

"The operation did not complete because the partition or volume is not
enabled. To enable the partition or volume, restart the computer"

which wells, obviously does not work

also they show up in the safely remove hardware function in the tray.

they show up everywhere but in my computer

Also, the strange things is this is the third motherboard I have
installed trying to get this to work, so not the motherboard.

Also, external USB hard drives show up fine and USB printers work fine.

have done a repair on windows, got all updates,

hate to have to say it but my next step is to do the usual reformat
and reinstall a fresh set of windows which seems really extreme to get
a card reader to show up
