Sometime when I open the recycle bin, empty it, then close the window, my
desktop "resets" and the entire explorer shell reloads. All the desktop
icons and system tray icons disappear for a few secoinds. Once the desktop
reset, I can contiun working, but some of the icons in my system tray are
missing (mouse, printer, etc.

It has me stumped....any ideas out there?

'The same thing happens to me. Sometimes it occurs when I close my computer
window' too. However it is the recycle bin window that cuses this to happen
most often. I was told by someone that it is to do with the refresh rate
setting and it is a characteristic of Windows XP. I have never done anything
about it just put up with it, so I am interested if anyone has an answer to
this too. I agree it is annoying.

Why it is resetting explorer I don't know. The loss of icons is because
this restart does not inform the running programs that put the icons
there, and they need to be restarted too in order to put the icons back.
They will still be functioning - you just lose the information/control
that the icons provide

BTW - if you have reasonably generous amount of RAM, go to Control
Panel, Folder Options - View and check 'Launch folder windows in a
separate process'. That will stop your losing the desktop in this way
after explorer faults when handling folders. Whether it will in *this*
case depends on whether the underlying fault was in handling the Bin's
own window - but it probably is. I have Control Panel lock up if I try
changing between Category and Classic view, and it deals with that
situation
