Empty lines sometimes disappearing

T

Thomas Wiedmann

Hello,

in a Word file I observe a strange phenomenom:
In a Word document a lot of empty lines - mostly (but not only) between
elements of an enumeration - at different locations are suddenly missing,
when I open the document later again.
This only concerns empty lines of Standard style. I've no autoformatting
activated.
So far I could not recognize the circumstances; I've no idea why or on which
conditions this could happen.

What may be the reason (and resolution of this problem) or how could the
reason be tracked?

What do you mean by "empty lines"?

Turn on View Non-printing Marks (Ctrl-Shift-8). Are your "empty lines"
paragraphs with nothing in them, or paragraphs with Add Space After or
Add Space Before turned on? Or something else?

The empty lines are simply paragraphs (CR) without any whitespace.

It's your assertion, then, that Word is deleting random paragraphs?
But only paragraphs with no content?

Is it possible that you have "Show White Space" (i.e., between pages,
in Print View) turned off, and what you're not seeing is only the
header and footer areas? In that case, position the cursor very
carefully on the horizontal break between two pages (the cursor
changes to a waffle iron -- or panini press, to update -- sort of
thing) and double-click.

I guess, but am not sure, that this effect (empty lines disappearing) only
occurs, if several Word documents are opened. The Word files are not linked,
nevertheless possibly it can't be excluded, that sometimes operations, which
are done in a document, affect also another one.
I have no idea, why this may happen, it's just a hypothesis - not yet
verified.
This phenomenom I've observed since working with Word 2007, too. The
documents are .doc files, i. e. compatible with previous Word versions
1997-2003.

Concerning the last posting reply:

Where can the option "Show White Space" be found exactly, i. e. which menu
entry/section?
In the Print View of Word 2007 I didn't find anything like it.

See my message of May 21 to which you replied, and from which you
deleted the instructions on how to deal with Show/Hide White Space in
your reply below.

Meanwhile I found the checkbox 'Show White Space' within the 'Options'; it
was activated and not turned off.
This could not be the reason for that strange behaviour, described.
