You can try a couple of things to see if this works:
1) goto view > current view > and select 'messages'
this will show messages in your inbox no matter when they arrived.
I've had this problem too, for some reason I sometimes accidentally get this
feature selected to have only the last 7 days viewable.
2) You may also have to change how that number in inbox is displayed, e.g.,
to change from total messages to the number of unread messages.
To do that, right-click on 'inbox', then select properties. Under the
'general' tab, you will see a couple of radio buttons near the middle. To
have the number by the inbox display only unread messages, select "show
number of unread messages".
