Empty Contacts Folder - E-mails show in To: field

Hello there:
I'm using Outlook 2003. I have one PST file (Personal Folders.pst),
The Outlook Address Book contains one folder (Contacts).
The PST file was scanned using ScanPst.
Contacts were lost somehow, and the Contacts folder is empty.
When creating a new e-mail, clicking on To: brings an empty address
book.
But, if I type some letters in the To: field I'm presented with a list
of addresses to choose from.
Can I get my contacts back (I'll be happy with the e-mail addresses
only)? How?
T.Y.

The addresses when you type are in the nickname cache, not an address book.

Did you only lose contacts or email and calendar too? do you have a backup?

Hello Diane:
TY for answering. Only the contacts were lost. I suspect that happened
because the person was on an Exchange server and didn't synchronize
properly. She left the company, so the only backup I have is a
outlook.ost file.
I tried to use OST 2 PST, but the soft crashed twice: First with the
original file, then with a scanned (repaired) version. The ost file
seems OK though: It worked well with the few other recovery programs I
tried. But saving is disabled on demos.
Where is that nickname cache you mentioned? Can I pull anything from
it?
TY

Diane, many thanks again. How dumb of me not to have thought of
checking the excellent Nir Sofer's site!
Pls don't ask me about the Exchange server settings: I have no
connection with the IT ppl there.
Now, I have a complete list of the nicks cache I can import in the
Contacts folder.
Even more, Ontrack EasyRecovery successfully repaired & converted the
ost file to a pst one I could add as data file into Outlook.
My only problem is the 3 Contacts folders I now have: The empty one I
started with, plus two I recovered (One being a backup - They seem to
have used something called Plaxo).
How can I get all my contacts into one folder?
TY

1. It's not a ticket, it's a newsgroup post.
2. It's only closed if it solved your problem. If it didn't, or if you need
more clarification, then its not closed. :)
