empty box/worksheet

Every time I load Excel, an empty box/worksheet pops up as well as an
ordinary usable worksheet. It's just annoying coz I have to close the empty
one every time. It causes no other problems.

I have nothing in the XLSTART folder nor "At startup, open all files in".

The box has only a title bar and up/down scroll bar. No toolbar nor menus.
If I maximize it, it only fills half the screen.
If I right mouse click on the title bar, I get Edit, Default, Properties.
If I select Properties, I get 4 tabs: Options, Font, Layout, Colours.

Any idea what this is and how to stop it popping up?

I don't have a guess where this is coming from -- or what it is...

When you rightclick on it, you should see its name in the Namebox (to the left
of the formula bar).

What do you see?

And do you see anything in the formula bar when you select that thing?

And depending on how you've upgraded excel, you could have multiple XLStart
folders. Are you sure that there's nothing in any of them?

Dave,

There is no formula bar - just blue title bar and black background and
up/down scroll bar. Also only one empty XLSTART folder. Any other
ideas...please!

I still don't have any good guess.

But do you see it if you start excel this way:

Close Excel
windows start button|Run
type:
excel
and hit enter.

Maybe it's the shortcut that you're running that does more than start
excel???????

And if that doesn't help, maybe starting excel in safe mode would give a clue:

Close Excel
windows start button|Run
type:
excel /safe
and hit enter.
