Emoticons stripped from message display

I just had to rebuild me hard drive and when I got OUTLOOK and Outlook
Express reloaded, I noticed that any smiley or other emoticon received in
the account has the graphic stripped out of the text. In OE it is a Red
"X". In OUTLOOK it is a link to the source in the text and an attachment to
the message. Is this an OUTLOOK or OE setting or some sort of AntiVirus
software measure? I am using Norton AV Corporate Edition.

Thanks.

Found the problem.

OE it is Tools>Options>Security>Download images.

In OUTLOOK it is Tools>Options>Security>Download pictures.

So every time you open those mails, you are linking back to the server that
provides the image. This is how web bugs work to track when a mail is
delivered and opened by the recipient, a favorite tactic of spammers to
valid e-mail addresses.
