I can't boot up windows...I was getting an error message about file
being corrupted. I then decided to reformat. Well when trying to
reformat, I get this error message.
"emm386 has detected error #1 in an application at memory address 00b8-
oe1b. To minimize the chance of data loss emm386 has halted your
computer. HELP????

How are you trying to reformat? The way to reinstall XP is to boot from the
XP installation CD and go from there.
Clean Install Windows XP

I tried a clean install and repair. My xp cd is an upgrade, so I was
asked to insert my ME cd, which I did, then XP couldn't read it...so
then I tried to do a complete reformat back to 2001 with my gateway ME
cd's, which is when I get that error. I originally started having
this problem when my computer got stuck and I shut down manually.
After that it won't reboot. I would prefer fixing the EMM error but
was giving up and going to try to do a clean install of windows
fresh.

Well this is a whole different situation than what you described. the EMM
error is not an error installing XP, but an error installing ME. You should
post to a newsgroup for ME, not XP.

It sounds like during the attempted install of XP you inserted some CD that
isn't an ME installation, but some sort or OEM recovery CD? Those won't
work with an XP Upgrade. One option is to buy a CD for a qualifying OS,
like Win98, on eBay. You can get them for low cost.

I did post the EMM error message in my first post. I didn't know it
was an ME only error. My system is originally ME but then I upgraded
to XP... I was trying to fix all this with the same CD's I used to
begin with. The XP cd I have was sent to me by Gateway because my
system was shipped on the cusp of XP being delivered. I was only
trying to to a clean install with the XP cd as a last resort, when
that didn't work, I resorted to a clean install of ME, which is when I
got that error message. I think I will try to find some trouble
shooting on getting rid of the EMM386 somehow since from what I have
read it is needed by DOS not ME or XP...not sure, I am just trying fix
this. I appreciate any/all help anyone can give me. I also wanted to
try a bootable utilities CD from gateway but i can't seem to force it
to boot from CD and boot from cd is listed as first in my bios...

Ok, that message does not occur in XP so you should ask in the ME newsgroup
I gave the link for or research it on the web. Good luck.
