Embedded space in telephone numbers

I'm using Microsoft Outlook 2002 (10.6515.6735) SP3. Whenever I enter a
telephone number in Contacts, Outlook forces a space between the Area Code
and the Exchange, i.e., (800)555-1212 (or 800-555-1212) becomes (800)
555-1212. If I edit the field, Home, for instance, and delete the space,
when I leave the field, the space is reinserted. Is there a setting that I
can use to not insert the space?

Reviewing my posting, I see that word wrap foiled my example. I will use a
lower-case b to indicate the inserted space: (800)b555-1212. Hopefully, this
will make the display of the problem more clear.
