Embedded Pictures do not show in ppt 2003, SP3

I have been sent a .ppt and the embedded pictures in it do not show. it
simply shows an empty box with a red X in the top left corner. It's
frustrating as I can see some other images. This issue just happened
suddenly, as before I had no issue. What setting's or properties do I need to
change?

Were you ever able to see the pictures that have the red X?

If so, what software did you load on your computer since then?
If not, they may have been saved using a compression that is not able to be
read by your computer.

The only software I have loaded last week was itunes.
I have powerpoint 2003 (11.8227.8221) SP3

Is this the latest version?
what suggestions do you have to fix this?
