Embedded object

When I link or embed an Excel spreadsheet into a Word document, all that shows up in the document is a single black line border around the object. Clicking inside that box activates the Excel, and it becomes visible, but when I click outside the box it "disappears" again. This occurs on only one machine -- the other displays it properly. I assume there is a setting that controls this behavior, but I do not know where to look. The PC is Win2000 running Office 2000. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

On the View tab of Tools | Options, make sure you don't have "Picture
placeholders" checked.
