Emails disappearing when read

All of my read emails have disappeared from Outlook Express although I have
not deleted them. I have Current View set to all Emails to be viewed. If an
email is read, Outlook Express is logged off and then logged back in again,
the previously read email has disappeared and is not in the Deleted folder.
Can anybody help - I've "Lost" a number of important emails.
