Emails Disappear from Inbox

When opening emails in Outlook 2002 by double-clicking on
them, upon closing the email by click the "X" in the upper-
right window, the email disappears from the Inbox.
Searching through all other folders yields nothing and
restarting Outlook doesn't help either. Although, if you
set Outlook's preview pane to view the emails and single-
click on them to view them in the preview pane, the emails
remain in the Inbox. Only double-clicking to open the
email then closing the window causes them to disappear.
Any ideas?
