Well, it depends on the file type and what compression/zip software settings
you use. If you're trying to compress a file you can't compress, such as a
graphics file, this is normal. 3.4MB isn't all that large and you might be
able to get away with it, if your mail server & the recipient's mail server
permits it.
The recipent's mail server will not take a file over 2M, I was trying to send
a .mpg file and it was 3.4mb to begin with I then made it a zip file and it
is still 3.4mb.
I was told that you could compress a file to send it, but no one I have
contacted knows how to compress it.

Zipping is compressing. MPEG files, however, being binary, just don't
commpress. One alternative you have is to obtain one of the many freeware
file splitters that are available on the net. You can then split the MPEG
into several pieces, with the recipient using the same or a similar utility
to recombine the pieces into the original file.
