Hi !

I am sending an Email containing a URL that ends with a DOT

Exactly, the url is
When the email is received, 2 things have happened :

1) the URL is underlined, so receiver can "click" on it to go to that
page

2) the "dot" has gone out from the URL and out of the underline,
so the link is un-usable.

Can someone explain this behavior ?

Thanks a lot. S.

This because in general a URL doesn't end with a dot and if it was added
you'd be having a lot more broken URLs that were posted at the end of a
sentence. You can easily work around this issue by using a HTML formatted
message and use Insert-> Hyperlink.

The Outlook editor assumes certain default behavior, e.g that a dot
would not be part of a URL. To manually override the default behavior,
use Insert Hyperlink, where you can paste what *exactly* is the URL.
Same thing if a URL contains blanks; the editor assumes the end of the
URL string when encountering the first blank.

Thanks - Pat & Robert.

But I have observed the same behaviour ...
when using GMAIL,
also with YAHOO mail,
and even more : I have tested Lotus Notes mail
and even more : I have tested SendEmail (from Command Line)

So, it is not an Outlook "feature", but generic in Email standards ...

One more point : nowhere it says an url can NOT end with a dot.

Cheers.

I'm not saying it is per definition an Outlook feature. The fact that other
mail clients implement the same formatting rules only acknowledges the fact
that it isn't very common to treat the trailing dot as part of the URL. I
was only saying that Outlook also provides the possibility to create a link
WITH a trailing dot.

In general you don't want URLs to end with a trailing dot because of this
confusion and although it is technically possible webadmins try to work
around it as much as possible. Since it is a wiki you can start the
discussion to opt for a URL without a trailing dot and use the current link
as a forwarder to a URL without the trailing. You can also contact Wikipedia
so they might want to prevent generating URLs with a trailing dot;
