email notification, but no email?

My computer "dings" when a new email arrives. Lately I am hearing the "ding"
but then there is no new email in my inbox or junk mail folder. Any ideas?

Also check the Deleted Items folder.
Do you have any message rules?

When the 'ding' sound happens without any new mail, is there a 'new mail'
icon in the system tray?

It will " ding" even if a message rule deleted the message.
