Email download fails with cell modem

My new laptop came with Vista. Installed Outlook 2003. All works well except
when I try to download email from my POP3 server when using a cellular modem.
Consistently results in error message saying server connection was
interrupted. Sending mail is no problem.

The odd thing is that the download works fine if connected to the internet
through a cable modem, or even through the laptop's wireless card while at
home on a weak connection from a neighbor's unsecured router.

The USB modem is from Sprint. It lets me surf the web all day, so Sprint
says it's not their problem. This is crippling me - I'm a consultant working
in client offices. They won't let me hook my laptop into their network, so
cell modem is my only choice.

If you can surf, can you not therefore logon to your mail via the web
interface?

Not ideal but maybe helpfull whilst you try to find a resolution

Yes, I can see the emails over the web interface. As you noted, it's not an
ideal solution. I can't send or accept meeting requests, for example.

I have tried eliminating all the messages from my webmail inbox and
replacing them with a single test message, thinking that the content of one
of the messages Outlook is trying to download might be causing the problem.
That didn't help.

If its ok both on the ethernet & wireless connections that might tend to
indicate a problem with the usb modem / usb interface

turn on logging in outlook and verify the account is set to use any
connection. with logging enabled, we'll have some clues to when its failing.
